One of my favorite hobbies is to take pictures, one of these days I’m going to get paid to take pictures for families. It WILL happen, You mark my words! It’s something that I really enjoy. I do my photography with my Canon EOS Rebel T5i that I got for Christmas this past year (well, really, I got it at Black Friday 2015 but it was my Christmas gift!) as well as my Samsung Note 5. I won’t lie and say that I don’t have a lot to learn still because the honest truth is I still know very little about it.
We recently went on vacation to Florida, and we stayed on the Gulf Side, so my chances of getting pictures of the sun setting over the water was every night for a week, well, every night that we were at our house for that week! I think I missed Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights, but the other nights we were “home” I got quite a few! The house that we stayed in, thanks to finding it on VRBO.com, was like it’s own little salt water oasis, trees, grass, 1 acre yard & woods, but with a beautiful view of the beach and the ocean!
Anyways, of course, I took this opportunity to test out some settings on my camera and attempt to get some good pictures.
I also have taken a few more since being home with my Micro lens, and those can be seen below too! Make sure you read on after glancing at the pictures because I have more to say on WHY I want to be a photographer!
While we were in Florida, we had some pictures taken by a
crook professional photographer. Everything went well, I thought, until we got ready to order the pictures after a week and first off, he wouldn’t really let us choose the ones we wanted. We knew we wanted a big one of the 6 of us (Hubby, our 3 kids, our nephew who lives with us, and me), One of just Hubby and I, One of the 4 kids, one of just our 3 kids and one of just Hubby, our 3 and I. There was one where we (the 5 of us) were all really smiling and you could tell we were laughing and I said that was definitely one that we wanted because I just loved it. His reply? Well, I’m not sure you’d want to look at such a big picture where everyone’s so happy all the time, would you? Um, Hello? The picture was fantastic, EVERYONE was looking at the camera, EVERYONE was laughing and smiling. Would I rather have a picture hanging up in our house where everyone looks grouchy, no one’s looking at the camera, or everyone looks pissed off? No thanks!
So we finally got it narrowed down the 3 prints we wanted. He refused to just let us get anything smaller than a 20×20, and said he would frame it for free. We chose one of the 6 of us as the big one, and then smaller ones of the 4 kids, and another of Hubby and I. Then we wanted a couple different prints (only 5×7) for parents & grandparents (4 of the 5 of us) and a couple others for here at the house. While Hubby was outside smoking, the photographer was going to go “figure up the prices” so we could pay him. Okay, fine… I waited… and waited… and oh! Waited some more. He comes back in the room with the price list and when he told me, my jaw dropped. Over $1700 for 10 pictures! The 5×7’s alone were like $180. The 20×20 was going to be almost $900. There is NO way… These were prints, printed on photo paper. These were NOT canvas prints. I wanted to cry. He required us to do a $200 deposit before he did our pictures, which was to be used (and he did apply that credit) as credit to our photo order. That would barely cover 1 5×7 picture! I’m sorry, the pictures were fantastic and gorgeous, but they weren’t THAT good.
Once we got home and were able to figure up our finances a little better, I let him know that there was absolutely NO way at all that we could spend that kind of money for pictures. He’s given us the run around about why they’re that much, why he’s the best, all this other B.S. but he’s still not getting that much money from us. Maybe prices are that much different in Florida, but in Missouri & in 2010, I think we paid NO MORE than $250 for pictures (outdoor pictures by a professional photographer) and we got all images on a CD, print release, the session fee and even several 5×7 prints & 3 8×10 prints. I asked him if for the $200, would he let us have the images on disc with a print release and he straight up refused. This is straight from his website, “With digital image sessions, you still get the look and art of C*** Portraits, but we give you a digital image copyright release that allows you the ability to print, e-mail, or create with images from C***. We are happy to e-mail you or mail you a copy of our pricing. Please call us at ***-***-****.” For his privacy, I have taken out his name and his phone number, because I am nice like that…
So yeah… If for no other reason than to be able to take pictures of babies, families, and stuff like that than to do something I immensely enjoy doing, I want to do it so I don’t have to rip people off like that..
Maybe I’m wrong in thinking he was ripping us off, but that’s absolute insanity. Those pictures better take about 50 pounds off me, make me look like a super model and make my kids absolutely flawless for me to pay that much money!
